Many points in this guide really strike a chord with any professional translator. I recently had to compete for a job against translating a health and safety manual for a large company from Spanish into English. My “rival” was a native Spanish speaker who was offering a much lower price than myself. The company was initially wooed by the price, not the promise of a quality job. After a one page test, checked by the company’s English teacher, no prizes for guessing who eventually got the job? If only every company did this, they would realise that having a reasonable or even excellent level of English does not mean someone can write it well. My Spanish is very fluent, and I can write general texts in Spanish, but I would no more offer my services translating into Spanish as I would into Chinese.

I have particular experience in tourism and culture (particularly Spanish-speaking countries), food and wine, psychology, the environment, medicine, biological sciences, education and marketing, but can tackle any subject, nothing phases me… Much of my experience comes from having worked on a professional basis in the subject, or through my studies ( I have a degree in psychology from the University of Reading, focusing on animal behaviour and clinical psychology).
Recent projects involve translating and adapting textbooks for Spanish schoolchildren learning about sciences using English as a vehicle, translating a quarterly magazine on education for sustainability and translating four books on learning how to paint.

I am a freelance translator from Spanish to English, living just outside Barcelona. I also work as a proofreader, copy-editor and ad hoc interpreter. Before moving to Spain six years ago, I travelled widely, with highlights being Asia and South America; I was also lucky enough to visit “the ice” in Antarctica. I have worked as a business English teacher and tour guide, and in environmental education. All of this life experience helps a great deal in my work as a translator!
